When traveling in and around Australia you need to be careful and observe normal precautions with your personal belongings.
Sun Protection you can get a sun burn on a cloudy day in Canada if you are outside and under protected so imagine what could happen in the more tropical climates. Australia has a much more direct line for sunlight which means less atmospheric protection than towards the poles. You need to protect yourself and your family even if you think you look like a dorky tourist. Wear the big floppy sun hat, douse yourself with sun screen and wear UV protective glasses and clothing. Don't worry too much about looking like a tourist.
Bushfires – Actually this refers to fires in general; because of the dry climate, Australians have to live with the constant consideration for fires that can quickly get out of hand. The danger period runs from late spring through summer and during this time, travelers and tourists need to observe safe handling of fire. Also, check the news before traveling in the wilds for alerts and notifications about bushfires and the potential for fire outbreaks.
Beaches – The shores of Australia are lined with some amazing beaches but those beautiful landscapes and vistas hold hidden dangers such as rip currents. Local government officials and agencies try to control injury and drowning with flag markers. It’s import to swim between the red and yellow flags when visiting beaches as they mark the safest place to swim. Also, never swim alone, never swim at night and avoid entering the water while under the influence or after a meal.
There's not much worse than spending your savings on an expensive Australian vacation and then spending the whole thing in a hospital or worse because of a lack of forethought. A simple mistake can ruin an entire stay. Just plan ahead and be cautious. Learn the local area and customs before participating in activities and exploring.
