Backpacking Europe at a young age?

I’m currently 21 and planning to backpack Europe with my girlfriend this summer. I’ve been wanting to do this since I was 18, but I always thought 18 would be too young. Was it?

Also, on a side note, is it reasonable to bring just a regular school backpack with one change of clothes, and attempt to travel with just that, buying supplies as we need them?

18 is on the young side to go backpacking, I think you were right in waiting a little longer.

Traveling with just a school backpack is great, but you will need a little more than just one change of clothing.
Bring underwear and T-shirts for at least a week, wear a pair of jeans and bring a second pair.
But you will have to do your laundry pretty often that way.
You can also bring some shorts, but you will need place in your bag for two pairs of jeans when you wear them.

PS:
Staying in hostels is not dangerous.
Carying weapons in Europe is not accepted and often not allowed, and not needed at all.
Clothing in Europe can be expensive, but if you buy in the cheap shops you can get a whole outfit for about $US 20.
